Nursery children are enjoying an exciting new approach to learning at Taverham Hall School.

Since opting out of the Early Years Curriculum almost a year ago, Taverham Hall School’s nursery department has been following a new, vibrant programme of learning.

Norfolk County Council allowed the school to not to follow the early years framework after it was rated outstanding by Ofsted. It is the first nursery in Norfolk to take the step and has been a great success.

“The foundations of the excellent Early Years framework remain, but without the restrictions we are able to offer even more opportunities and prepare the children for our school,” says Allison Skipper, head of Pre-Prep and the Early Years Foundation Stage.

A major part of this new approach is the Jolly Phonics scheme, which is a fun and child-centred approach to teaching literacy with actions for each of the 42 letter sounds. The nursery’s form two group, who are aged three and four, have fun learning their letter sounds with actions, songs, puppets, craft activities and cooking. The children also take advantage of being able to use the school’s outdoor classroom for forest school – getting fresh air, discovering bugs and exploring nature, all while developing core literacy and numeracy skills.
