Sophie Ames, owner with her husband Iain of the Norfolk Lighting Company in Taverham, explains their one-stop approach to creating a successful customer-focused interiors business

Q Please tell us a little about the history of The Norfolk Lighting Company.

A The Norfolk Lighting Company is the culmination of my love and passion for lighting and interiors, combined with the entrepreneurial drive and skill set of my husband Iain. We both adore Norfolk and both really wanted to run a local business, and now we really feel that we are rooted here forever. The county has a lot to celebrate and we are very proud to be a tiny part of that.

Q You have a wide range of styles and prices on display at your Taverham showroom. Tell us about the ranges you stock and how you select them.

A Key brands include Searchlight, Dar and Elstead, we also have displays of bathroom and outdoor lighting. Whether you want glamorous statement lights, vintage shades or industrial design, we have something for all tastes. We have a range of fabrics from Voyage to create bespoke shades, and also for upholstery services and soft furnishings which can be made to match. We select our ranges based on style, quality, value and most of all by considering what our customers want and are asking us for.

Q As a family business, what skills and experience are you able to bring and how to you use them to help your customers?

A The Norfolk Lighting Company developed from an established electrical contracting business, Diamond Controls Ltd, so right from the start we have had a strong backroom team, NIC EIC approved electricians to hand and the experience of Iain, who has been an electrical contractor for 22 years. Once a customer has chosen their lights, we can install everything at incredibly competitive rates, can carry out any other wiring and testing necessary and can also install lighting control systems.

Q What about if a customer wants something special? Are you able to help with bespoke pieces or particular interior design requirements?

A With the huge array of home makeover programmes, interior magazines and the internet, customers come in with plenty of ideas. They know what they want the end product to look like but sometimes not how to get there. So we will often spend a couple of hours in the showroom working through various ideas or will make an appointment to visit their home completely free of charge. All of our lighting can be modified and we can make bespoke pieces. That is when we all get really excited and can let our creative side go.

Q So, Iain and Sophie, what is your Big Idea for moving forward the county’s interior and exterior home lighting offering?

A We aim to become the true one-stop solution and a business that really makes time for its customers. If you come to us, we’ll design your lighting alongside you, come to your home (or building site) to get a feel for what you are trying to achieve, install the electrical wiring and lighting control if required, and will fit every single light at the end.
