The legendary shop in Holt has been given an award from the Housewares Innovation Awards 2019

Bakers and Larners of Holt has been named as Britain’s Best Independent Department Store at the 2019 Housewares Innovation Awards.

It’s the second time the store has won this prestigious accolade, having been named Best Independent Department Store at the Housewares Innovation Awards in 2016 and also at the Excellence in Housewares Awards in 2015.

Managing director Michael Baker said: “Again, through the hard work and dedication of our staff, Bakers and Larners of Holt has picked up another national award for excellence.”

And the store will find out this month if its food hall has won another prestigious award as it is a finalist in the delicatessen and grocer, food hall and specialist cheese shop category of The Guild of Fine Food’s annual Shop of the Year awards, which recognise excellence in independent retail.

Having had a written entry reviewed by a panel of industry experts, Bakers and Larners will now undergo two further rounds of judging; an announced visit from one of the judges and a mystery shop. The awards will reach a finale on Monday, March 11 in Harrogate

Meanwhile Norwich Market has claimed the title of best large outdoor market in the country in The Great British Market Awards 2019.

A spokesman for the National Association of British Market Authorities (NAMBA), which organises the awards, described the city market as ‘a phoenix rising from the ashes’, adding: “(Norwich) Market has demonstrated the power of social media for the market; its work with partners and the local BID; the outreach to young traders and the marked increase in footfall and business expansion.”
