Help in the garden

The garden is calling you - but the first stop has to be the garden centre!

If you’ve spent your winter working out new planting schemes for your borders, sketching redesigns of your patio, and plotting an overhaul of your veggie plot, you will be itching to get started.

Norfolk’s garden centres are all geared up for one of their busiest seasons of the year, and as Steve Oakley, marketing manager at The Bawdeswell Garden Centre, explains it is about making sure customers get the expert advice to make the right choices that will make their gardens beautiful.

“We have very well trained and experienced staff who are happy to help advise our customers,” says Steve. “We are something a little different here because we are an independent, destination garden centre which is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year.”

Helping owners Peter and Judy Underwood, their team and customers to the garden centre, restaurant and Bluebell shopping centre celebrate that anniversary on June 1 will be celebrity gardener Katie Rushworth from BBC’s Love Your Garden.

Of course, Taverham Nursery Centre is another great place for getting expert advice as well as top quality plants and garden products. Our very own monthly Garden Guide columnist, Keith Clouting, is among the team at the garden centre, where there are also some 17 individual shops and the Country Shopping store.

The nursery grows between 60 and 70pc of all the plants it sells, just two miles away at its production nursery at Felthorpe.

With the spring comes the start of mowing the lawn, and Norfolk lawn lovers are fortunate to have Bartram Mowers at Eaton, home to a wide range of brands from Hayter to Mountfield, plus a knowledgable sales team able to offer advice on which mower is best for your needs and how to look after your turf.

Those working in the servicing and workshop department are highly experienced in maintaining and mending the machinery too.

For garden improvements that involve hard landscaping, J Medler Limited (Medlers) has simulated garden displays covering over 400 square metres at their Taverham office which are bound to offer inspiration.

Sales Manager, Richard Simpson, explains that Medlers is Bradstone’s Premier Landscaping centre for Norfolk and Suffolk and is one of the largest Bradstone paving centres in the country.

“This is a family run business that is well established in Norfolk, and our customers know that they can come to us for advice from trained, experienced staff, and that we have plenty of stock available so that people can take away their purchases straightaway.”

That is no small boast - they have several million bricks, blocks, roof tiles, paving products and associated building materials always available, and from these vast stocks you can buy and take away the same day or arrange delivery to almost anywhere throughout East Anglia.
