View across Great Yarmouth Racecourse
I have been here 13 years and, though I have seen many racecourses around the country, I do think Great Yarmouth is one of the most picturesque. It is a flat course by the seaside with a golf course in the centre, and with the big skies above. It’s beautiful here first thing in the morning with the sun rising and the dew or frost on the grass.
There has been racing at Great Yarmouth since 1715, previously at South Denes, but after the First World War it was moved to here at North Denes. So, for 100 years they have been racing on the same surface. This month we are going to start regrading and reseeding the one-mile straight – like relaying a one-mile lawn. Unfortunately that means we will lose two fixtures in October and there will be no racing until June, but I look upon it as a short-term loss for a long-term gain – it will be like a one-mile snooker table in future!
