“My handbag is a like a Tardis,” laughs Emma Thorburn, owner of baking company Buns of Fun.
“My handbag is a like a Tardis,” laughs Emma Thorburn, owner of baking company Buns of Fun. “I have to be able to get everything in there; my iPad, a packed lunch, books and snacks for my children and all my work stuff.”
Emma, who lives in Sheringham, set up the company in 2010 making clever, cute cakes for weddings, birthdays and special occasions.
“My son Gabriel was six months old when we moved to Sheringham and I didn’t know anyone so I joined a few baby groups. We would have picnics on the beach and everyone would bring food – so I started making cakes and buns.
“One night, some of the mums came for dinner and as a little extra I made them mini Fimo models of their babies as place settings. Over dinner we got talking and they suggested I combine both skills – creating personalised cakes using my modelling skills – and Buns of Fun was born.”
Emma, who has since had second son Brodie, says starting the company seemed the perfect way to do something she loved and have more time with her children.
“When I was little I loved helping mum to bake. I was always fascinated by the process of baking, getting your hands in the mixture and creating something. But I didn’t think about it as a career, baking was more about a necessity to feed the family. Now it is a necessity which feeds the family in a different way,” she laughs.
Hummingbird diary, Letts, £8, from Bakers and Larners, Holt
This has to be with me all the time. I write down everything I need to remember each day for the family and the business. A lot of it is abbreviated and looks like meaningless squiggles, but to me it makes perfect sense.
Pink Garmin Forerunner 10, from £80.
I am a newly obsessed runner. I started seven months ago and have already done a couple of 10km runs. I love this for monitoring my performance and then trying to better myself.
Mini tape measure, free.
This actually comes from a Christmas cracker and because of its miniature size it is perfect to take out and about with me to measure things like cake boards and stands and any decorative bits I need.
Moleskine A6 pink notebook, from £7.99.
I am obsessed with having a little notebook in my bag. I write all my design ideas in it, details of conversations about new orders and possible recipes I find.
L’Oréal Paris Glam Shine six hour lip gloss, Fuchsia Obsession, £6.99.
I don’t wear much make up but I love this as it makes my lips feel soft and adds a hint of glitter and shine. It says it lasts for six hours and usually it lives up to its promise.”
And a little something else….
Usborne wipe-clean ready for writing activity book, £4.99.
This is an essential at the moment to keep Brodie occupied. I took him on a photo shoot the other day and these wipe clean books are fab as they keep him occupied and he is doing something creative.
